Curtis Peeteetuce, Superhero!
Actor, playwright, and Artistic Director Curtis Peeteetuce was the SIGA Poet Laureate at READ Saskatoon’s PGI Golf Tournament on September 14.
The tournament theme was “Superheroes!”
Peeteetuce wore Gino Odjick’s name and number on a Canucks hockey jersey. Odjick is Anishinabe, an avid reader, and lives with a life-threatening heart disease.
At the Awards Banquet, Peeteetuce took to the stage. Here’s his poem:
So…golf & reading on a Monday, eh?
This is all so new to me, but I’ve got a few things to say.
There’s so much I can share, what a day of lit resource.
But there’s so little time, so let’s start with things seen on the course.
Today’s the big tourney, I sure hope you got sleep.
Because a good part of the day may be shouting “Bleep! Bleep! Bleep!”
And did you bring a sweater, because I can lend you a layer.
But if we don’t win, hate the game not the player.
Hey, on this drizz cloudy day, they have comp margaritas.
And free coffee by cruising caddies for the wig-coloured divas.
We got heroes, we got lotsa leisure golfers just chillin’.
I even saw Major Focus and Super Serious…yeah we even got villains.
Jack Saddleback representing, good to meet you. Rock on!
And tanisi Eagle Feather News. EFN. Effin’ John!
Some teams jokingly disbanded, had enough bird watching.
No eagles for us, dang score cards all blotchy.
And I in my cart, cruising with Cecilia 1 to 18.
Yeah, I’m quite humbled by all the golf things I’ve seen.
And now I am thinking about what makes a hero.
A warrior, a champion, an icon so feral.
A colour-coded soldier with powers unreal.
Like a lady of wonder or a man made of steel.
‘Cuz I’m a playwright, I write words, I write plays .
Then I take all the words from the page to the stage,
perform all emotions from the joy to the rage,
face my fears, show to show, day to day.
But when it comes to being super I don’t know what to say.
‘Cuz you see I’m just me. Nothing less, nothing more.
I came here as me, the same one as before.
What is a hero?
I came dressed as my own, his name’s Gino.
Can I be a wonder? Someone who gives plenty?
After all, today’s folk at this place, wow there’s so many.
Today I’m inspired, thankful to be among the buzz.
Yes I’m a hero, your laureate. I’m a poet…and I didn’t even think I was.
