New scholarship available for women in mining

Women in Mining/Women in Nuclear SK (WIM/WiN SK) is pleased to announce the launch of its inaugural postsecondary scholarship, the first of which will be awarded in September 2016. This scholarship will provide an award of $1,000 to a returning post-secondary student in Saskatchewan who embodies the values of diversity and leadership in the mining or nuclear industries.
Four years ago, WIM/WiN SK began as an idea among several women working in the Saskatchewan mining and nuclear industries. Based on the national chapters of Women in Mining and Women in Nuclear, the Saskatchewan-based female mining experts started with a small group of local women and built the WIM/WiN SK organization. Today, WIM/WiN SK has grown from 10 to almost 450 members in four short years. The membership is made up of women and men, ranging from professional miners, administrators, students, and mining consultants.
Awarding an annual post-secondary scholarship was a major goal of the organization from the outset, in order to support its mission of promoting career interests in the mining and nuclear industries, particularly among women and young people. Co-Chair Anne Gent said, “Achieving this goal is a major milestone for WIM/WiN SK, and it would not be possible without the support of our membership and sponsors. When we started, we thought it would take us 10 years to get to this point. We are very excited to have achieved this in less than four years.”
Students from all programs and backgrounds are encouraged to apply, but must be able to demonstrate a link between their field of study and the mining or nuclear industries. Applications are due May 31, 2016 and should be submitted to scholarship@wimwinsk.com. In addition to receiving funding, the recipient will also be given a one-year post on the WIM/WiN SK Leadership Committee to encourage student engagement.
The 2016 award will be given out at the organization’s annual Mine Your Potential Conference, scheduled this year on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Saskatoon Convention Center.
