University of Regina announces new Strategic Plan
- EFN Staff | January 19, 2015
The University of Regina has officially launched its 2015-2020 Strategic Plan entitled peyak aski kikawinaw: Cree for “We are one with Mother Earth.” The plan was approved unanimously by the U of R’s Board of Governors.
The Strategic Plan identifies three key areas of priority: student success, research impact, and commitment to communities. It also highlights two overarching areas of emphasis - Indigenization and sustainability – that the U of R says will thread throughout each priority and inform work on the University’s campuses.
A 15-member facilitation team developed the plan, gathering input from hundreds of faculty, staff, students, alumni, community members, and other University stakeholders and community partners.
“The strength of this plan is a direct result of the collaborative nature that was central to its development,” said Lee Ellliott, Chair of the U of R Board of Governors. “This is a collective vision for the future that the U of R community can be proud of.”
The U of R says work stemming from the its 2009-2014 Strategic Plan (mâmawohkamâtowin: Our Work, Our People, Our Communities) resulted in consistent growth in enrolment, including setting new enrolment records: increasing the Aboriginal student population by 50 per cent and doubling the number of international students.
President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vianne Timmons, says the U of R is well positioned to build on its strong history and ensure the long-term growth and success of the institution.
“Focusing on our key priority areas is crucial for our success over the next five years and beyond,” she said. “Over the past five years, we have implemented many important initiatives to support the success of our Aboriginal students, faculty and staff and to Indigenize the University. We will continue to build on this good work as we move forward with our new plan, while also looking to increase our commitment to sustainability,” said Timmons, adding that within the plan, sustainability encompasses economic, cultural, social, and environmental sustainability.
Also included within the plan is the U of R’s new vision statement: “The University of Regina aspires to be a national leader in developing educated contributors, career-ready learners, and global citizens, and in generating meaningful, high-impact scholarship.”
