The Saskatoon Tribal Council recently held an official welcome for Syrian refugees who now call Treaty 6 territory home.
“We welcome the new Canadians to Treaty 6 territory. Canada is a place of opportunity and prosperity we extend our friendship to you,” said STC Chief Felix Thomas at a ceremony at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
Thomas shook the hands of the Syrian Refugees along with Dana Soonias, CEO of Wanuskewin Heritage Park as a symbol of welcome to Canada & Treaty 6 territory at a special event held at Wanuskewin for some of the refugees.
“We are happy to host this special welcoming alongside the Saskatoon Tribal Council here on Treaty 6 territory & offer the Syrian refugees some First Nations cultural programing today to introduce them to the original Canadians history,” said Dana Soonias.
In attendance at this memorable event was local singer Elly Thorn, who filmed the cultural exchange for her upcoming music video.
"As the original welcomers of us all, First Nations people inspire Canadians to reach out to newcomers," said Elly Thorn. "We are honoured to work with the Saskatoon Tribal Council and Wanuskewin Heritage Park to reflect this in our music video, which will stand as a testament to Canada's strength through unwavering hospitality and inclusiveness."
The event included dancers from Indigenous Ensemble, and wrapped up with a round dance for all in attendance.
