The Canadian television series Cashing In premiered its fourth (and final) season last week on APTN.
Cashing In is unique from all the other Aboriginal TV series because the project was conceived as a training initiative for Aboriginal crew. Over the course of four seasons, it has trained:
- 4 WRITERS: Elizabeth Denny (3 seasons) Jacquie Black (2 seasons), Trevor Cameron (3 seasons, one as story editor) Mike Gosselin (4 seasons, one as story editor)
- 5 DIRECTOR INTERNS: Cam Lazotte, Trevor Cameron, Michelle Latimer, Adam Garnett Jones, Tracey Deer
- 1 DIRECTOR TRAINEE: Tracey Deer (2 episodes over 2 seasons)
- 3 PRODUCER INTERNS: Stephanie Scott, Roger Boyer, Tihemme Gangon (1 season)
- 2 PRODUCER TRAINEES: Tina Keeper, Vanessa Loewen (4 seasons)
- 9 GENERAL CREW POSITIONS: Working in partnership with Film Training Manitoba, we successfully trained Aboriginal people in the following departments; Camera (Jenna Neepin), Location Sound (Daniel Jebb), ADs (Dustin Courchene and Kimberly Martin), Hair (Brenda Rocchio), Grip (Imre Horvath), Business Affairs (Joanne Soldier), Office PA (Chris Gabb), Art Department (Melissa McClaire)
Season 4 of Cashing In picks up where the third season left off. John Eagle (Glen Gould) has been kidnapped and Matthew Tommy (Eric Schweig) takes control of arranging his return. Liz (Karen Holness) has been left in despair on her wedding day, and Justin (Wesley French) can’t help but blame himself.
Cheyenne (Sarah Podemski) holds onto her ambition within the casino despite Trevor’s (Gregory Odjig) sense of foreboding and his run-in with Eddie (Stephen Eric McIntyre), and Barry (Kyle Nobess) finds himself torn over his true love. Season 4 brings back Tina Keeper as Aura Sphere, Nancy Sorel as Claire Eastman, Tracey Nepinak as Earline Muskrat, Gabriel Daniels as Dog, Jenny Pudavick as Stacy Pelletier, and Akalu Meekis as Scott.
Shot on location in Winnipeg, Selkirk and Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Season 4 takes the audience back to North Beach Casino and Stonewalker First Nation, with the same high-end sexy feel and glamour, and that twist of suspense viewers have come to love.
Cashing In is directed by Norma Bailey with director of photography Alwyn Kumst. The series is a co-production between Animiki See Digital Production, Kistikan Pictures and Buffalo Gal Pictures, with executive producers Norma Bailey and Phyllis Laing, and producers Vanessa Loewen, Desiree Single, Tina Keeper and Ellen Rutter.
The fourth and final season of Cashing In consists of six new half-hour episodes, adding to the 20 episodes completed in three previous seasons. Right from the start, Cashing In has been a leader in training initiatives for Aboriginal crew, ranging from entry-level internships to key position upgrades. Mentorship has taken place for Aboriginal screenwriters, producers and directors.
Cashing In: Season 4 was produced and developed in association with the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN); Canada Media Fund (CMF); Government of Manitoba – Manitoba Film & Video Production Tax Credit; and The Canadian Film and Video Tax Credit.
