Cumberland House wins come-from-behind thriller

The Cumberland House Islanders are The Ralph Pilz Trophy winners with their victory on Saturday’s championship game over the Creighton Kodiaks.
It was a cold rainy afternoon at the Max Clunie Field in Prince Albert. The Creighton Kodiaks were led by Shawn Francois who carried the ball repeatedly fighting for every yard and scoring the game’s first two touchdowns. This was followed by a Kaylab Ranks touchdown and an 18-0 Kodiaks lead early in the second quarter. Cumberland House was down but never gave up. Kieran Thomas a recorded touchdown for the Islanders with three minutes remaining in the half. The score at half time was 18-6 for Creighton.
In the second half, Seth Sanderson scored a touchdown early in the third quarter to pull the Islanders within one major score. This was the only scoring of the third quarter with Creighton leading 18-12 going into the fourth. A number of turnovers and penalties by the Kodiaks provided the opportunity for Cumberland to regain the lead. Seth Sanderson scored two more touchdowns to provide the Cumberland House Islanders the lead. Shawn Francois responded with his third touchdown of the game, late in the fourth quarter however the Islanders prevailed with a final score of 32-24.
Congratulations to both teams, the Cumberland House Islanders and Creighton Kodiaks, for playing an exceptional game. Each team left it all on the field. They have made us proud and will represent northern Saskatchewan next Saturday in the provincial quarter finals. Cumberland House will host Rosthern and Creighton will travel to Wakaw.
