The Lac La Ronge Indian Band recently completed a mini golf course called the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC). The project was approved last year but due to the winter months, construction couldn’t start until the summer. The community’s new facility costed approximately $200,000 to do with funding from one of the Canada 150 grants.
“The money was free we took advantage of it,” said Kevin Roberts, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band Director of Sports and Recreation. “We put in the application for the grant and got it approved.”
The mini golf course is currently not in operation until the springtime. There’s still some things that are needed to complete the mini golf course, such as getting some putters, installing a security fence, and ordering the remaining equipment to complete the facility.
Roberts said he is proud that JRMCC mini golf course is completed. He and the community’s leadership can’t wait for everyone to enjoy it when the weather is warmer.
“It give kids and families another option to do something. That’s what it boils down to is just another family entertainment for the community,” he said. “It’s something unique…this is a fun activity. Anybody can play it.”
Roberts said the JRMCC mini golf course is part of the community’s overall vision of facility and community development. The leadership are looking at constructing bike park next spring.
“We’re always looking ahead and seeing what else we can do,” he said.
