Career Distinction: the Power of Personal Branding
- The SAPA Team | January 14, 2015
Aboriginal professionals are increasingly dancing their unique professional styles, and making significant contributions in the business world. The success of our Aboriginal peoples drives the workforce to expect more out of each of us. As well we are experiencing an increased pace and variety of career paths. We change companies due to such factors as company downsizing, management changeovers, and pursuit of new challenges. Factor in tighter competition from our growing talent pool, and we quickly realize the importance of distinguishing ourselves amongst the workforce. But what does this mean?
Personal branding is a concept that really speaks to the power of one’s reputation. The marketing field tells us that a successful company understands its brand and markets its key competencies with that focus in mind. Personal branding, like a dancer’s unique moves, relies on our understanding of our key competencies. So, how are we doing to maximize our individual brand? We know that our reputation is a critical first and lasting impression within our extended circles. What others see and think of us is based on our actions, associations, and online presence.
As we compete in highly focused job markets, a good practice is to ask ourselves, what key characteristics do we wish others to think of when our name comes up? If this feels difficult, ask a trusted colleague or mentor to help you shape your thoughts. Take a moment to decide how you will use this information to enhance your particular brand in the community. What organizations or causes do you want to be associated with? What educational or job pursuits are aligned with your area of expertise? As we continue to dance our distinctive professional styles, it is increasingly important to pay attention to our footwork. “Dancers, dance your style” has more relevance now than ever!
