NAIG cancels boxing event

The Regina 2014 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) Host Society and the North American Indigenous Games Council have made the decision to cancel boxing due to low registration numbers. This decision took in 2 factors: the number of events or weight categories that an athlete can box in and as well the number of athletes currently registered for the boxing event.
Interim CEO Ron Crowe for Regina 2014 NAIG says, "The low numbers mean there wouldn't be a fair opportunity for the boxers to have healthy competition. Because of the many categories we would feel that the athletes may not have another competitor in their weight class the week of the match."
Crowe adds, "Boxing registration has been historically low at past NAIG events and this is something that we were prepared for. The cancelation of the event however doesn't affect the rest of the Games or our planning which is still going ahead."
Regina 2014 NAIG will host the athletes and teams from 26 regions in North America's Indigenous communities as they compete in 14 different sports. It will celebrate and share North American Indigenous cultures through a showcase of language, tradition, art, song, dance and ceremonies. The theme of the Regina 2014 North American Indigenous Games is "Raising the Bar" and plans to do this by exhibiting youth excellence in sports and culture.
