Library celebrates Aboriginal Storytelling Month

Storytelling is a gift and a custom embraced by Aboriginal people to teach, entertain and remember. Throughout February, Saskatoon Public Library hosts several First Nations and Métis events to celebrate Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Month.
Northern Saskatchewan author and storyteller Harold Johnson shares traditional stories from Cree mythology and talks about his journey as a storyteller 1 to 2:30 p.m., Monday, February 9, Cosmo Civic Centre Theatre; and 9:30 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 10, Cosmo Civic Centre Combatives Room, with Carlyle King Branch hosting. Johnson also reads from his recent novel, The Cast Stone, and upcoming works 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, February 9, Rusty Macdonald Branch.
Rabbit & Bear Paws, a comical and interactive puppet presentation based on traditional teachings, takes place 1:45 to 2:45 p.m., Friday, February 6, Cosmo Civic Centre Gymnasium, hosted by Carlyle King Branch; 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday, February 7, Station 20 West, hosted by The Library on 20th Street Branch; and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Monday, February 9, Cliff Wright Branch.
Jessica Generoux presents the magical art of shadow puppetry in Seven Sacred Teachings from 2 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, The Library on 20th Street Branch; and 2 to 3 p.m., Thursday, February 19, Frances Morrison Central Library.
Other events include the craft program Dream Catchers, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, February 12, J.S. Wood Branch; Aboriginal Story Time, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, The Library on 20th Street Branch; and Aboriginal-Themed Games Day, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 25, The Library on 20th Street Branch.
