Mayor's Marathon Day
- June 21, 2015 | March 13, 2015
Mayor Donald Atchison is organizing a Mayor’s Marathon Day, a recreational endurance event to support charitable activities in Saskatoon. The event will be held on Sunday, June 21, which is also National Aboriginal Day in Canada. The event will be a walk, run or wheel between Whitecap Dakota First Nation and Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
“This event is all about wellness - bringing people in the Saskatoon region together in a healthy activity,” said Mayor Atchison.
The Mayor will start his journey at Whitecap early on the morning of June 21 and is anticipated to reach Wanuskewin in the early evening. Runners and walkers alike will be invited to join Mayor Atchison as he enters the city limits. The marathon, marathon relay, half marathon, 10k, 5k and 2K races are being planned at locations within the city limits. The Mayor’s arrival at the race start line will trigger the beginning of the race. The races will be timed, and participants will pay a fee to register and can raise pledges to support a charity of their choice.
This event is meant to shine a light on the importance of physical activity for all ages and all people. It will also highlight the Meewasin Trail / Trans Canada Trail that is being built between these two First Nations communities. Today’s date of March 12, 2015 gives participants 101 days to engage in a fitness program to participate in the Mayor’s Marathon Day. Mayor Atchison has been training for months and is determined to travel the 34 miles – 54.72 Km journey between the two First Nations communities on foot.
