PotashCorp has committed up to $100,000 for relief efforts aimed at helping Saskatchewan forest fire evacuees, beginning with support for local activities and immediate needs while thousands of people are kept away from their homes.
In the short term, the company has dedicated about $20,000 to helping local Emergency Services Teams in Saskatoon and Regina, as well as providing transportation, shelter, food and local activities through organizations including the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
“The scale of these fires and the devastation they have caused throughout northern Saskatchewan is virtually unprecedented,” said PotashCorp President and CEO Jochen Tilk. “Our hearts go out to all those who have been displaced from their homes, and we hope that our assistance can help during a very difficult time.”
PotashCorp is also granting employees the opportunity to train and volunteer to fight fires with no loss of pay, providing their efforts are part of the provincial firefighting effort and local mining operations and emergency services can be maintained.
Longer term, PotashCorp is exploring how it can help with ongoing needs for evacuees or supply immediate food needs when those affected return home to their communities across the North.
