RCMP officer rescues woman from burning home
- EFN Staff | June 20, 2014
A member of the Deschambault Lake RCMP detachment is being hailed as a hero after rescuing a woman from a burning residence.
On Tuesday, a constable was doing a traffic stop on Kistapiskaw Street when he noticed smoke coming from a nearby residence.
Several people outside the home were waving their arms to get his attention. The house was on fire, and the people believed one person was still inside.
The officer went inside, realizing the back of the home was fully engulfed in flames. There was also a significant amount of thick smoke.
Even so, he was able to locate a 21-year-old female who was asleep on the couch in the front of the home. He woke her and got her safely out of the home.
Once outside, the officer was told there may be children still inside the home, so he re-entered, but the heat was too intense to search. Fortunately, the children were located and found to be safe outside the home a short time later.
The home was completely destroyed, but the Deschambault Lake fire service team managed to contain it so it didn't spread to any other residences.
Deschambault Lake and Battlefords RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
