Tasha McKenzie was super excited when she found out that she made it for the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) to compete in volleyball.
"I asked all my friends if they made and they made it, too. So we were extremely excited not just only to play volleyball but for the whole experience."
It's her first time in Saskatchewan and she says it's beautiful here. McKenzie is hoping to have a fun time while she's in Regina.
"I'm looking forward to the healthy competition; I know it's going to be good. And we're going to be playing against other good girls so I'm really excited about that.
"It makes me feel really good, I get to spend time with my friends and you get to make new friends in the sports. It's like a family, really," she adds.
She's trained with her team as much as they could. It was hard for them to get together since everyone lived all over the province. But when they gathered to practice, they made the most of it.
McKenzie's currently attending university and going into her second year of schooling with high hopes of making something out of her life.
"I'm thinking of majoring in English and after that, take my Education and hopefully become a teacher."
Her message to the youth who would like to participate in NAIG is to never give up hope that you will get to where you want to be.
"You really have to work hard if you want to make it. Don't come for the social aspect - come for the sporting. The social aspect is a plus, and you really have to train hard and you really have to love your sport."
