Saskatoon's Westmount School raises Métis flag
Westmount Community School has proudly raised the Métis national flag in front of their school. The flag raising was held at the beginning of the Métis Cultural Day celebration at Westmount, a day-long celebration of cultural activities and learning more about Métis history. Principal Nicola Bishop-Yong welcomed students and dignitaries to the ceremony on a calm Monday morning. Dignitaries addressed the children and language elder Norman Fleury spoke to the importance of speaking and preserving the Michif language. Veteran Frank Tompkins was on hand to handle the honour of raising the flag. Westmount is home to the Saskatoon Public School Division’s Métis cultural program.
