This year the senior boys soccer team at Stobart Community School had an awesome season. They played with heart, determination, and passion. They finished the season with an 8 win 2 loss and 2 ties.
The team was primarily made up of athletes from neighbouring Beardys and Okemasis First Nation and this gave them a roster of 95% of Aboriginal decent.
The boys placed first in Regionals, then hosted the Provincial Championship the following weekend. Stobart went into the championship tournament ranked sixth, and played # 3 ranked Stoughton. Stobart came out with a 4 – 0 victory, this win sent them into the semi–final against #2 ranked St. Brieux.
The semi-final was a back and forth battle, but Stobart prevailed with a 5-2 victory which secured a spot in the following days Gold Medal Final vs. #1 ranked Middle Lake.
“We were in the dressing room all pumped us and anxious for the game and just trying to not be nervous. We listened to the coaches game plan and we felt ready.”
In the finals, the game was intense to say the least. It was an evenly matched game which saw the score tied 1-1 into the last 5 minutes. Sadly, the boys fell short and lost 2-1.
“We were heartbroken as that final whistle blew and they began celebrating. We fought hard and will take the loss with sportsmanship and gratitude, after all a Provincial Silver isn’t too bad either.”
